Custom Made Quilts

Lovers Knot Quilt

I am trying to make a quilt for my neices as they get married. My aunt Hattie did it for us so I wanted to carry out the tradition.

This one is Rebekah's quilt done in plums, greens and taupe. The prints used were all small and very traditional quilting cottons. Instead of machine quilting this one I tied it with cream embroidery floss and I actually liked it better that way. The finished quilt was queen size and Rebekah and Jeff use it in their master bedroom. I gave it to them at their bridal shower.

Sweet Lullaby Quilt

Shown here is the crib quilt I made for the baby shower for my daughter-in-law Michelle. I used a pattern found in a magazine and altered it slightly to my personal taste.

As we knew Michelle was having a boy, I used colours that were suitable for Mason. The bear's body is a soft fine corduroy which give texture as are the small Ohio Star blocks around the outside. The main area is all free-motion stipple quilted with outline quilting on the outer blocks.

Flannel Lap Quilt

Cream flannel teamed up with a pretty print make this lap quilt both cuddly and beautiful. A navy flannel backing adds to the warmth.

The multi-sized print sqares, set on the diagonal, add visual appeal. It is machine quilted in a large grid pattern. I gave this to my in-laws for their anniversary as they like to take an afternoon nap.

Double Rail Fence Quilt

Here is the finished quilt I made for my daughter Rachel. She and her sister had just moved to a new apartment in St. Catharine's so I did their quilts as a house warming gift. Rachel wanted teals and golds. I mixed in some darker greens and neutrals and then did a double rail fence. Simple but very elegant.

I machine quilted the main blocks in straight lines and on the wide border I machine quilted a diamond pattern. It looks beautiful on her new rod iron bed.

Bugs, Bugs, Bugs Baby Quilt

Bold, bright primary colours frame the appliqued scene of a bright sunny day in the meadow. All appliqued pieces were attached with fusible web and the machine- stitched around with a satin stitch. Sometimes the thread matched and sometimes a multi-coloured thread was used.

This was made as a crib quilt but Avril (my good friend's daughter)loved it so much she uses it as a wall hanging. The baby's room was all done in a bug's theme so it fit in perfectly.

Block Quilt

One day while shopping with Esther I purchased these quilt blocks at a store that was going out of business. They were the perfect colours for Roslyn's new bedroom in St. Catharine's. I added complimentary sashings and borders and then machine quilted along the lines to enhance the design in the purchased blocks.

Mosaic Tile Quilt

I made this quilt as a wedding present for our friend's daughter. The pattern is fashioned after a stain-glass window. I wanted something different so I used drapery fabrics for the tile pieces and the grout lines are black cotton. Paisley patterns and plain moire satins give it a rich shiny look.

Machine quilting on both sides of the grout lines enhance to stain-glass look. Overall results were very appealing. Finished size was a large lap quilt, approx. 56" x 68".

Teddy Baby Quilt

This is a purchased quilt top in the "Teddy Bear Jeans" line, popular in quilt stores. The finished product shows that even a purchased printed top can be finished to look cute. I backed it with a blue-grey check cotton and used that as binding also.

After basting it all together, I machine quilted around all the shapes in the centre of the panel and then along each border. On the back it is almost a complete mirror outline image of the front. Very cute but definitely for a boy (I think).

Amish Mosaic Tile

My niece was getting married and she loved bold bright colours. I used the mosaic tiles pattern and added the pinwheel blocks on the outside to add extra interest.

In total 12 plain cottons were used along with the black for the grout lines. Pieced fan blocks were added to each corner and the binding was made by joining strips of all the colours together. Because it was quilted in pieces the back also has the coloured binding covering the seams. Outline machine quilting fininshed the project.

Anniversary Quilt

My parent's 55th anniversary was the reason for doing this quilt. I saw the pattern in an Australian quilting magazine and fell in love with the colours and the applique. I customized the centre of the centre block to suit my purpose. Using my husband's computer and Bubble Jet 2000 I printed their wedding picture onto fabric as the focal point.

All the features in the large applique border have meaning to my parent's life. Their love of birds, gardens and flowers were the reason for adding the small details. All applique was done with fusible web and then securely attached with satin stitching. Free motion quilting around all the details and nine patches finished off the look.

Log Cabin Quilt

The first quilt I made from start to finish was this one for my son Ryan.

My good friend Esther had myself, Barb and Beth to her house for the week to complete our quilts. We absolutely had a riot. No men to deal with, just fabric, coffee and wine. The finished quilt is about 78" x 102" and Ryan uses it daily.

In the picture we are experimenting with layouts as Barb observes from the couch. The biggest problem was keeping the two dogs, Fugi and Swish, from rearranging things before we were ready. The shown layout was the one I chose. It was finished with some hand quilting and some tying with brown embroidery floss.

Mine

I finally kept a quilt for myself although it didn't start out that way. It was to be a gift but matched my living room too well to give away. Once again the mosaic pattern was used and this shows how by changing only the fabric a whole different look is acheived. This one also was machine quilted in a very basic outline pattern.
