One of my dearest friends and quilting buddy gave me this pattern and fabrics as a gift. The other day I sat down to start the process. I have selected the fabrics I will use on the main butterfly, will see about the other ones later.

Left wing traced onto paper side of light weight fusible web

The instructions tell you to trace entire wing and detail sections separately but I want to reduce the amount of stiffness. Therefore I am attempting to cut the wing detail sections out of the main wing giving only one layer of web. Will see how that goes!
After cutting out the individual wing pieces the outer shape of large wing was too flimsy to lay out accurately so I recut the large wing piece. By eliminating much of the inside web I will still have recused the stiffness of the overall project.

After fusing the smaller pieces to their chosen fabric, the tedious job of cutting them out began. Wasn\'t quite as bad as I thought it would be. Then using pattern sheet as a guide I arranged the pieces in their correct position.

First section ready to go to be fused

So the coloured portions of the wings are fused to the black main wing section. Both left and right along with the body section are together. Positioning the pieces was actually easier than I thought it would be.

I'm not a fan of the original overall pattern. It is a 40" x 40" wall hanging with various butterflies. I am thinking of doing a more art quilt approach, perhaps a natural background like grasses, shrub or small branch. We will see!

Original pattern, nice but not really me!
